Strawberry Christmas Tree

2 min read

This one is a great table centrepiece, but also a great kids activity! With multiple hands at work you’ll be surprised at how quickly this comes together. Then with a dusting of icing sugar, the fragrance of juicy strawberries and garden picked mint will waft across the Christmas table making you hungry for dessert!

Ingredients

  • Approx 10 punnets for the size of the tree shape we used (see video) Allow extra for snacking, ones that don’t go on properly, and ones that might look NQR
  • Toothpicks
  • Icing sugar
  • Sprigs of mint
  • Foam base to form foundation of tree (Spotlight) & Glad Wrap to cover

Method

  1. Wash and dry strawberries
  2. Cover tree-style cone with a few layers of glad wrap
  3. “Pin” each strawberry to the cone with a toothpick, making sure the toothpick doesn’t stick out the end of the strawberry
  4. The fat end of the strawberry goes against the foam shape, the pointy end of strawberry sticks out
  5. Cover as much of the foam tree shape as you can
  6. Then use mint sprigs to sit in the gaps to hide the foam and plastic underneath
  7. Dust with icing sugar to look like a gentle frosting of snow

Things to Consider

  1. We found the strawberries “stuck” better when we didnt chop off their ends before applying to the tree
  2. You can try covering the tree in toothpicks first, then adding all the strawberries...or adding a toothpick and strawberry as you go
  3. Multiple hands will speed things up a bit.
  4. Consider the age of the child and the pointy-ness of the toothpicks and the possibility of them poking themselves as they push the strawberry onto the stick, or the stick through the strawberry
  5. Little ones could help with the mint or the dusting of the snow
  6. Could serve with little chocolate dipping pots
